4/9 of the books in a class library were non-fiction books, The rest were fiction books.
The student borrowed 1/2 of the non-fiction books and 2/5 of the fiction books.
There were 60 books left in the class library.
How many books were there altogether at first ?
Solution:
Working with model
Borrowed non-fiction books = 2u
Borrowed fiction books = 2u
Left non-fiction books = 4u - 2u = 2u
Left fiction books = 5u - 2u = 3u
Left books in total = 2u + 3u = 5u
5u = 60 or u = 12
At first, there were 9u = 108 books
