Ratio: Dan and Zach paid for X-Box

The ratio of the amount of savings that Dan had to the amount of savings that Zach had was in the ratio 8 : 5. They decided to share in the cost of an X-Box in the ratio of 3 : 1. Dan used half of his savings to pay for his share and Zach paid $120 for his share.

What was their total savings after paying for the X-Box ?

Solution:

Use model is the right way !

Dan spends half of his saving to pay for his share, which is 3 units = $360.
So before paying for X-Box, initially Dan had $720 (=8u) --> 1u = $90
While Zach had 5u, which is $450.

After paying X-Box:
Dan's money is 720 - 360 = $360
Zach's money is 450 - 120 = $330
Total saving = 360 + 330 = $690
