There are 836 youths in a carnival. 7/10 of the males and 7/8 of the females took a bus to the carnival. The number of males who did not take the bus is twice the number of females who did not take the bus. How many females did not take the bus?
Solution:
See the ratio below
We understand from the info that number of males who did not take the bus is twice the number of females who did not take the bus, so from 3:1, turns it into 6:3 and they can use same units now.
So the whole ratio table becomes:
Males --> 14u : 6u : 20u
Female --> 21u : 3u : 24u
Total youths = 20u + 24u = 44u --> 836, u = 19
Number of females not taking bus = 3u = 57
