At first Mr. Menon had 380 more books than magazine in his bookshop. He then sold 1/4 of the books and 3/5 of the magazines, The number of books left was 600 more than the number of magazines left. What was the total number of books and magazines Mr. Menon had at first?
This problem has three alternative solutions as stated in PSLE support page.
@Victor Joe
Look at the denominator of each fraction which is 4 and 5. A common multiple of 4 and 5 is 20.
So we say that:
Books = 20 units plus 380
Magazine=20 units.
Sold 1/4 of the books which is 5 units plus 95. This means you have 15 units plus 285 books left.
Sold 3/5 of magazine which is 12 units. This means you have 8 units of magazines left.
The difference at the end is 600.
Thus (15 units +285) – 8 units=600
Thus 7 units + 285 =600
Thus 7 units=315
Thus 1 unit is 315/7 = 45.
At first Mr Menon had 40 units plus 380 or (40x45)+380
Answer: At first he had 2180 books and magazines.
