Shawn spent $420 of his salary on a bicycle and gave some money to his parents. He then spent 3/7 of the remaining salary on food and saved the rest. The amount he saved was 1/3 of his salary. The amount he gave his parents was 1/4 of his salary.
(a) What fraction of Shawn's salary was spent on food ?
(b) How much was Shawn's salary ?
- We start by putting food as 3/7, draw seven units remainder and food occupies 3 units (food = 3u).
- Now saving will be 4/7 or 4u. Please take note that 4u equals to 1/3 of his salary, it means his salary will be 4u x 3 = 12 units.
- The amount given to his parents is 1/4 which is equal to 1/4 x 12u = 3u.
- It means the money he spent on bicycle $420 equals to 12u - 4u - 3u - 3u = 2u.
- Solve for u, we get u = 420/2 = 210
(a) Fraction spent on the food = 3u/12u = 1/4.
(b) Total salary = 12u = $2520
